REFLECTION: 3

From revisiting solo material and reflecting on the full runs of particular pieces, there are aspects which are lacking, from enjoyment of my movement to loosing the focus within the performance. Therefore, I began to re-evaluate my creative choices and ask myself the questions from when creating the movement within the creative process when the concept was raw and new. Gaga focused on pushing our boundaries, whether that is time and repetition or pushing our bodies to the extremities. To add to, I asked myself if my solo moments made me feel powerful or in control of the space around me. “Each culture develops their own form and each individual in a culture expresses themselves through dance” (Alexander , 193, 3:40 mins) and it is our individuality and creative choices which makes our own dance powerful to our selves. I reflected back on reoccurring concepts and themes throughout the piece for creative inspiration and to acknowledge what my movement should feel like. For example, Joss Arnott explained that the motivation and meaning behind Wild Shadows was individual to our own journey through the performance which will highlight empowerment, ‘fire in the belly’, passion, musicality and rawness in our movement. My personal journey through the piece explores a challenge of dominance to resolve as an integrated organism of lost individuals finding their way together. Furthermore, it was my responsibility to develop a curiosity within my solo material and dancing overall to be unapologetic to create cohesive dance performance. Moving forward the overall concepts and themes can be dismissed or forgotten when running through movement and drilling; however, the essence and understanding of what the movement should feel and look like is what I need to focus my energy on. I personally feel I have the movement known in my body and executed; however, I now must focus on my own power behind how I move and consider a re-structure or new creative if my performance becomes uninteresting or apologetic. I now know that this will occur with the maturity, understanding and experience of touring dance works that the performances will consistently change and develop from further exploration as an ensemble to individual choices. To add to, Company Chameleon Dancers, Kadafi, explains that the most challenging aspect of touring is "the need to keep focused and locked on at all times, whilst also being patient because the first time running will never be your best" (Meet the cast: Kadafi, 2022, line 20). The exploration through touring and the development of the work is on going, the first time a piece is performed will be a different piece when closing the tour. In rehearsals currently, I find myself adapting moments within my solo which feel more natural or challenge my exploration and creative artistry further.
