Currently an ongoing process of learning new skills within touring
Below is what I have currently learned through tour admin work with acknowledging what I can do to translate information more clearly as well as learning what everyone else needs to relax through travelling.
To think on the spot: whether someone has missed the train or if we are on the wrong platform, it’s knowing how to direct someone else to the correct location or communicate the next train times.
Not to be too precious over the first plan: I believe myself to be very organised and critical with time management; therefore, when times change and location changes occur, I am aware to expect change on the day as delays, people being late and traffic can interrupt the plan
Many opinions when multiple people are travelling: directing a company to and from locations is a responsibility I wanted in order to challenge my leadership skills and confidence in speaking up and planning what the action is to take. I have come to learn that there is a need for a plan A, B and C with differing desires and others time management. I have found that communicating through giving my advice; such as “I would suggest (particular train time) due to less changes and having time to settle at the location” rather than being directory; such as “We will be getting (particular train)”, as people question the reasoning behind the decision.
One of my main skills is organisation and time management, I have enjoyed this particular role because it has helped my move from my comfort zone and feeling responsible for a group of people which has boosted my confidence in leadership. To add to, when creating itineraries, and keeping in mind the time for technical rehearsal, breaks, food, and warming up, is a clear insight into what the background jobs are within touring performance work. Furthermore, this particular organising skill and planning concept will help when I produce my own work with funding. On the other hand, skills gained from this role are beneficial when applying to teaching job roles and various freelancing roles where commuting and time management are essential. For example, a recent interview with Lanes Dance Academy informed me that the role entails opening and locking up the building as well as, administrative roles such as uniform sales, handling money, travel responsibility to festivals and creating a show itinerary.
